Configuring a Cisco IP 7940/60 Gateway Phone

Items Required:

  • Cisco 7960 IP Phone
  • Cisco power adapter
  • Broadband internet access w/ a Static IP
  • Router or Switch w/ a DHCP server. ***

***A Switch or Router with a DHCP server is required so that your computer and/or other devices can connect to the internet at the same time as the phone.


To setup the Cisco phone 7940 or 7960 at home, perform the following:

  1. Plug in the power adapter.
  2. Plug in the Ethernet cable going to your router, from the SW port on the phone - press 'Settings'
  3. Press 3 for 'Network Configuration'
  4. Press 33 for 'Erase Configuration'
  5. Press * * #, and then click on the 'Yes', and then 'Save'
  6. Wait about 2 minutes.
  7. Press 'Settings' again.
  8. Press 3 for 'Network Configuration'
  9. Press 32 for 'Alternate TFTP'
  10. Press * * #, and then click on the 'Yes' button, DON'T click 'Save' at this point.
  11. Press 8 for 'TFTP Server1'
  12. Press 'Edit', change to the TFTP server provided to you by Gazelle (i.e. 123.456.789.345), press ‘Validate’ and then press 'Save'.
  13. Wait up to 5 more minutes, and the phone will come up.
  14. You only need to go through the above procedure once per location. You can follow the same procedure to get the phone working anywhere else (i.e. somebody else home, etc), basically anywhere you can connect to the internet through the Ethernet port.

216.81.48.12 - Western Canada
216.81.55.12 - Eastern Canada & USA
216.81.56.12 - Western USA
216.81.59.12 - Southern USA

 

FYI - if you are pre-configuring a phone prior to shipping to an end user, you can follow along, but skip step #2 (i.e. do not connect the phone to the network), and skip steps #12-14.
